INST 5535: INTERNET FUNDAMENTALS
Prerequisite: Basic computer literacy.
Telecommunication technologies, such as the Internet, provide a range of both challenges and opportunities. Student will learn to use various tools, such as listservs, newsgroups, gopher, world-wide-web and assorted search engines, and address practical and policy issues related to the information explosion and the proper use of electronic network resources across disciplines.

INST 5535 provides graduate level coursework for learning these Internet fundamentals. This course is one of the on-line courses at University of Houston–Clear Lake (UHCL) in the Instructional Technology Department. The course is based primarily on a student-centered teaching model. The course provides students the knowledge and skills to use and integrate the Internet into educational settings.

The course is designed by Dr. Trudy Driskell, Lecturer for Instructional Technology, and a team of course developers at UHCL. If you have any immediate questions or comments, please feel free to contact Dr. Driskell at driskell@cl.uh.edu.

To register and to gain further information about the course or the Instructional Technology master’s degree program at UHCL, please come visit our program website at http://inst.cl.uh.edu.

In addition to this information page, a wealth of help and support is available at the Student Support Site for on-line courses at http://courses.cl.uh.edu.

NOTE: It is the responsibility of the students to make sure that they have the necessary computer resources and skills to take these classes.
Students are not required to purchase their own computer, but must have access to one that meets the specifications of the course.

The computer must be able to connect to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider and allow the student to browse the World Wide Web using a modern browser.

The Internet connection must not be impeded by a firewall. Many school districts, medical facilities, and corporations use firewalls to restrict their students and employees from accessing inappropriate material or engaging in inappropriate activities. Firewalls will restrict the use of important on-line instructional tools, like Chat or posting to Discussions, and can completely prevent you from logging on to your course. Check with your ISP to insure that a firewall won't cause you problems.
