Calculated Questions
Calculated: students answer a mathematical question. You specify the mathematical formula and
the set of variables, along with a range of values for each variable. A set of answers is
generated for a randomly selected set of variables.
-
From your course Homepage, in Designer Options view (the default location and view when
you log in as an instructor), Click on the link you created with the Quiz/Survey Tool.
In this example, the link is titled "Quizzes".
-
Select "Question Bank" from the Quizzes/Surveys page.
-
You should see a page similar to the one below. Note the Category and
Question Type selections that must be made before creating the new question.
-
After selecting the desired category for your question, select
the type of question you wish to add from the drop-down box.
For this example, select "Calculated" then click on "Go".
-
Enter the question title and the content of the question. One suggestion
is to use enough of the initial part of the actual question so that when
you see just a list of the titles, you will be able to easily associate
the title with the actual question.
For Calculated Questions, enclose variables in curly brackets,
{ }. For example:
-
If you want to create, import, or edit an equation, use the
WebEQ Equation Editor for Windows or for
Macintosh. Note: Depending on administrator settings, the Equation Editor may not be available.
-
From the Calculated Question screen, under Formula, in the Formula text box, enter the mathematical
formula using the supported functions in the following table:
-
For instance, the formula for this example question (How long does it take to travel {x}
miles at a speed of {y} mph?) has been entered as:
-
Select "Analyze Variables" and set the parameters of your formula
variables.
-
Next, generate a table of values for the variables and the resulting
answers. These values will be used to replace the variables and will determine
the appropriate answer when the question is generated for the student.
-
Finally, type in any general question feedback and select "Save".
- To enter additional questions into this category, return to Step #4.
-
To view the specific instructions associated with creating the different question types, please click
the appropriate link below. Note that a True / False question is a form of a Multiple
Choice question. However, there are only two possible answers, either True or False.
