Creating a WebCT Welcome Page

The Welcome Page allows you to provide course information to prospective students. Visitors do not need to enter a username or password to view your Welcome Page.

You can customize the Welcome Page by adding a banner image, textblocks, icons representing links, and a background image. You can also customize the page colors. You can change the layout of the screen by arranging the links in one or two columns.

Visitors can access the Welcome Page from two places:

  1. From the WebCT Student Support homepage, click the WebCT Course Listing button.

  2. Or, from the WebCT Welcome Page, click the WebCT Course Listing button.

  3. Either way you will end up at this page:

  4. Here is an example of a welcome page. You can look through them yourself by browsing the course listing page and clicking the button.

  5. To create your own Welcome Page, from the Control Panel, click the Course Settings Button, then select the Edit Welcome Page button.

  6. The Create/Edit Welcome page screen appears. From here you can customize your page. You can add text, links, and graphics. We will do a few simple operations. Let's add some text. Click on the Add upper textblock button under Options: Textblocks.

    The information you should consider adding to your Welcome page is:
    1. Current UHCL catalog description; including prerequisites, if any
    2. Instructor name, email or department contact information
    3. Main software/hardware requirements for course (especialy if unusual, copstly, etc.)
    4. Link to your academic program and your website if you have one.
    5. Link to the UHCL WebCT Student Support Site

  8. Use this form to add text to your welcome page. Try out the different settings and options.

  10. WebCT provides an HTML Editor that has an interface very similar to MS Word. You can edit your text and add formatting without typing code. You can switch from WYSIWYG to HTML View if you want to edit the code. To switch back to the text box click the Text button. Click the Add button at the bottom of the form to save your work.
